मङ्गलं भगवान् विष्णुः मङ्गलं गरुडध्वजः ।
मङ्गलं पुण्डरीकाक्षः मङ्गलायतनो हरिः ॥

maṅgalaṃ bhagavān viṣṇuḥ maṅgalaṃ garuḍadhvajaḥ, maṅgalaṃ puṇḍarīkākṣaḥ maṅgalāyatano hariḥ

Auspicious is Lord Vishnu, auspicious is he whose banner bears Garuda, auspicious is the lotus-eyed one. Hari is the home of all that is auspicious.

Meet the couple

Aarya and Kabir as painted wooden dolls under a red canopy hung with marigolds, the sacred fire between them.

At the mandap

Varmala

Aarya and Kabir face each other, each holding a garland of marigold and tuberose.

इष एकपदी भवiṣa ekapadī bhavaOne step for nourishment. May our home never lack food.
ऊर्जे द्विपदी भवūrje dvipadī bhavaTwo for strength, of body and of spirit.
रायस्पोषाय त्रिपदी भवrāyaspoṣāya tripadī bhavaThree for prosperity, earned well and shared.
मायोभव्याय चतुष्पदी भवmāyobhavyāya catuṣpadī bhavaFour for happiness and comfort at home.
प्रजाभ्यः पञ्चपदी भवprajābhyaḥ pañcapadī bhavaFive for family, and the children we may raise.
ऋतुभ्यः षट्पदी भवṛtubhyaḥ ṣaṭpadī bhavaSix for every season we will see through together.
सखा सप्तपदी भवsakhā saptapadī bhavaSeven for friendship. With this step, be my friend for life.

The seven lines are the saptapadi, the seven steps, as given in the Āśvalāyana Gṛhyasūtra (1.7.19). In most North Indian families they are taken as seven pheras round the fire. A family’s own pandit may use other words, and those can be set here in their place.
